Editorial
The first
miscellaneous article covers a tragic death of a young girl
from Romania following the bite of a rabid cat. Sadly, PEP
was not administered and the girl was hospitalized after the
first signs of the disease. In the doctors’ desperate fight
against the inevitable the “Milwaukee protocol” was used,
however without success.
The second article
is provided by the colleagues from the ANSES, Nancy which
was designated as European Reference Laboratory for Rabies
in 2008. This article reviews data on rabies diagnoses and
follow-up investigations of oral rabies vaccination
performed in NRLs in the European Union in 2010.
The rabies data for
the 2nd quarter of 2011 is presented in tables and a map.
For the first time in recent decades rabies cases were
detected in Macedonia. Presumably the cases were noticed as
a result of the increased surveillance and awareness
activities as part of the EU-funded oral rabies vaccination
programme in Macedonia.
